“TV Licence Fee Hiked: Eligible for Discount?”

Must read

The price of a TV Licence increased to £174.50 in April 2025, affecting many individuals. This annual fee is mandatory for households or businesses that watch live TV or use BBC iPlayer. However, some individuals may qualify for a discounted licence at £7.50, specifically those in residential care or sheltered accommodation who meet certain criteria.

According to the UK Government, eligible individuals living in residential care homes, supported housing, or sheltered accommodation can avail the £7.50 TV Licence. Furthermore, discounts and alternative options are accessible to registered blind individuals and those receiving Pension Credit from the Department for Pensions (DWP).

Pension Credit, distinct from the State Pension, is means-tested support for individuals over State Pension age with low income, potentially boosting weekly income. Individuals claiming Pension Credit can apply for a free TV Licence at 74, transitioning to a free licence at 75. Additionally, individuals registered as blind or living with a blind person can receive a 50% discount on their TV Licence.

For further details, visit GOV.UK or the official TV Licensing website. In 2024, a 2.9% increase in the licence fee was announced by the Secretary of State, effective from April 1, 2025, in accordance with annual CPI inflation. This adjustment raised the yearly colour licence fee to £174.50, while the black-and-white licence now costs £58.50 annually. Future fee increases will be linked to CPI inflation until 2027.
