Maria Corina Machado, the recipient of the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize, announced that she presented the award to Donald Trump during a meeting at the Oval Office this afternoon. Many had anticipated that Machado, a prominent Venezuelan opposition figure, would assume leadership following Trump’s recent intervention to remove dictator Nicolas Maduro from power.
However, there were indications that Trump had reservations about this notion, as Machado did not explicitly decline her Nobel Prize but instead offered it to him. Since the intervention, Machado has made occasional appearances on U.S. news networks, seemingly attempting to sway the U.S. president and secure her position as interim President.
After the meeting, Machado confirmed that she had given her Nobel Peace Prize medal to Trump as a token of appreciation for his unwavering dedication to their freedom. She likened the gesture to a historical event where General Lafayette gifted Simon Bolivar a medal featuring George Washington’s likeness, symbolizing solidarity between the U.S. and Venezuela in their struggle against tyranny.
In an earlier interview, Trump described Machado as a pleasant individual, indicating that their discussions would revolve around fundamental matters. However, following the U.S. intervention in Venezuela, he expressed doubts about Machado’s ability to lead, citing a lack of support and respect within the country.
Following speculation about her intentions, the Nobel Committee clarified that the Nobel Prize is not transferable once awarded, emphasizing its irrevocable nature.
After her meeting with Trump, Machado exited the White House and greeted a group of supporters who had gathered near the gate, receiving cheers and hugs from the crowd. Addressing them in Spanish, she expressed confidence in President Trump’s support.
Subsequently, Machado proceeded to Capitol Hill, where she commenced a meeting with a bipartisan assembly of senators, engaging with lawmakers individually. She exchanged handshakes with some and shared warmer interactions with others, notably embracing Republican Senator Ted Cruz from Texas.
Machado also posed for photos with the group before engaging in closed-door discussions with them.
