Wythenshawe crash: Car ‘lands on pedestrian’ as collision causes multiple casualties

Several people are injured after a car reportedly flipped over and landed on a pedestrian yesterday.

The area was swarmed with emergency responders shortly before 5pm as a number of vehicles were involved in a collision. Police, paramedics, and fire crews were joined at the site by two air ambulances, as well as enhanced rescue units after the devastating incident in Wythenshawe. Investigations continued through the afternoon and evening, with a large cordon in place.

A local mum said her three daughters had to be rushed to hospital. They had been in a taxi at the time of the collision. One of the girls suffered a cracked rib and collarbone. Witnesses said another car appeared to have been flipped onto its side at the traffic lights and landed on another person who was walking along the pavement, Manchester Evening News reports. It has now emerged that a man and the dog he was walking were killed.

Tram services were cancelled on the Manchester Airport line throughout the evening as a large closure remained in place at the busy junction for investigation work to take place.

Pictures from the scene showed a number of ambulances and police vehicles lining the road. An evidence screen was also erected around the flipped over car.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) said on Sunday afternoon: “Just before 5pm this evening (Sunday 9th March), two fire engines from Stockport Central and Wythenshawe fire station, along with the Technical Response Unit from Ashton, were call to an incident on Greenwood Road, Wythenshawe. Firefighters have been in attendance for around thirty minutes and are still at the scene.”

Greater Manchester Police has confirmed a woman was arrested at the scene of the crash. The force said: “Shortly before 5pm on Sunday 9 March 2025, we were called to reports that a pedestrian and a dog had been struck by a vehicle at the junction Hollyhedge Road and Greenwood Drive, in Wythenshawe.

“Emergency services were in attendance, but despite their best efforts, the pedestrian, a man in his 60s, and a dog sadly died at the scene. A woman in her 40s was arrested at the scene on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. She has been released on bail. We are now appealing for witnesses to help us with our enquiries.

“The vehicle, a black car, was travelling south on Greenwood Drive towards the junction of Hollyhedge Road. As the vehicle entered the junction it collided with another vehicle on the opposing carriageway, before hitting a pedestrian and sadly causing fatal injuries at the scene to him and his dog. There were no other serious injuries to report.
