Zipcar, a popular car-sharing service utilized by 650,000 drivers, has made the decision to cease its operations in the UK. The closure announcement comes after a consultation process that commenced in late 2025.
Approximately 650,000 drivers across the country will be impacted by this move. The company, owned by a US entity, notified its British clientele on December 1 that it would temporarily stop accepting new bookings from the beginning of the upcoming year.
Following this announcement, a formal consultation process was initiated with the 71 UK-based employees as of the end of 2024. In a communication sent to customers recently, Zipcar confirmed the discontinuation of its services in the UK.
The correspondence stated, “As per clause 7.5 of the member terms, consider this as formal notice that your account will be closed in 30 days. Although new bookings are not possible with Zipcar UK currently, existing accounts will remain active until February 16.”
Customers were assured that they would receive a prorated refund for any unused portions of their memberships or subscriptions, calculated from the beginning of 2026.
Zipcar clarified that the refund process would be automatic and no action would be required from the members. Financial reports from the company indicated that it experienced an increased loss of £5.7 million in 2024 due to a decline in customer usage.
