Max Verstappen’s triumph at the Las Vegas Grand Prix on Sunday took on added significance as Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri were retrospectively disqualified from the race. Norris, who led the drivers’ standings 24 points ahead of Piastri and 25 points ahead of Verstappen, now faces a narrower lead of 42 points over Verstappen following the McLaren duo’s disqualification.
Verstappen’s victory in Vegas propelled him closer to Norris in the championship battle, with the Dutch driver now tied in second place with Piastri. McLaren’s double disqualification reshuffled the standings, setting the stage for a tight finish to the season with only two races and a sprint race remaining.
After the race, Norris and Piastri were summoned by the stewards due to suspicions raised by FIA technical chief Joe Bauer regarding their cars’ skid blocks not meeting post-race regulations. As a result, both drivers’ race results were invalidated.
Verstappen, who successfully overtook Norris for the top spot, saw his fortunes soar even higher with the McLaren drivers’ disqualifications. Mercedes also had reason to celebrate as George Russell was promoted to second place in Vegas, securing his third podium finish of a remarkable debut F1 season.
With the season rapidly approaching its conclusion and only a limited number of points left to earn, the focus now shifts to the upcoming Qatar Grand Prix and the final race in Abu Dhabi. Verstappen, aiming to overcome Norris in the championship race, is buoyed by recent developments but faces an uphill battle to dethrone the current titleholder.
The championship scenario remains fluid, with Verstappen needing a strong finish in the remaining races while hoping for Norris to stumble. A potential tiebreaker looms if Verstappen and Norris end up level on points, with race wins serving as the deciding factor. Norris maintains a lead due to his consistent performances earlier in the season, but Verstappen’s recent form adds pressure on the McLaren driver as the season nears its climax.
The championship standings now reflect the intense competition at the top, with Norris leading the pack but facing a resurgent Verstappen and a determined Piastri. As the season heads towards its thrilling conclusion, the battle for the championship title is set to intensify, promising fans an exhilarating end to the F1 season.
