“Urgent Call for Organ Donation Education in UK Schools”

Must read

An advocate for organ donation is pushing for enhanced educational programs in schools as the UK transplant waiting list reaches a peak. Presently, over 8,200 NHS patients are awaiting life-saving organ transplants, with nearly 5,000 individuals losing their lives while waiting for a transplant in the last ten years. The government has pledged to take action as the percentage of bereaved families supporting donation has dropped to 59% post-Covid from 68% previously. A touching account was shared about four-year-old Beatrix Adamson-Archbold, who hand-delivered a letter to Sir Keir Starmer at No 10 Downing Street last July.

The courageous young child spent more than 15 months at the Freeman Hospital in Newcastle awaiting a heart transplant. Her father, Terry, is campaigning for organ donation education to be integrated into the national school curriculum. Terry emphasized the significance of increasing awareness and normalizing consent to address the declining rates of organ donation approvals, citing the impact on individuals like Beatrix and Charlie Frieland.

Highlighting the transformative impact of organ transplantation, Terry discussed the substantial costs incurred by the NHS for Bea’s care before her operation in June 2023 at Freeman Hospital. Advocating for organ donation lessons in schools to raise awareness and reduce financial burdens on healthcare systems, Terry emphasized the life-saving potential of each donor’s decision.

Cheryl Adamson, Bea’s mother, received a British Citizenship Award for her involvement with Bea’s 500 Club, a charitable organization. The couple, who have experienced both loss and hope in the realm of organ donation, have been supported in their advocacy efforts by various individuals and organizations, including Sergio Petrucci and Orgamites.

The government is contemplating a review of the national curriculum, with input from Professor Becky Francis and her expert panel. The Mirror’s Change the Law for Life campaign successfully introduced the opt-out system for organ donation in England in May 2020, known as ‘Max and Keira’s Law’ in memory of two organ donation recipients.

Under the new opt-out system, all adults in England are presumed to consent to organ donation unless they choose to opt out. Readers are encouraged to visit the NHS Organ Donor Register for more information.
