In his pursuit of greater influence over Greenland, Donald Trump disparaged over 400 British soldiers who lost their lives in Afghanistan. Trump, speaking to Fox News, reiterated his grievance of perceived unfair treatment by NATO, despite the US being the sole country to invoke Article 5 of the NATO treaty for assistance. Article 5 mandates mutual defense among member states, which the US activated post-9/11 for the Afghanistan campaign.
During the interview, Trump callously belittled NATO allies’ contributions, claiming they sent troops but remained distant from combat. The UK alone deployed around 9,500 troops among the 36,000 sent by NATO members to join the ISAF mission in Afghanistan, resulting in significant British casualties, second only to the US.
While addressing CEOs and global leaders before retracting his Greenland ambitions, Trump accused NATO of unfair treatment towards the US, emphasizing his push for the organization to increase its efforts. This is not the first instance of Trump showing disregard for fallen troops, as he previously faced backlash for derogatory remarks about American soldiers’ sacrifices.
Reports suggest Trump labeled soldiers killed in action as “losers” and “suckers,” and allegedly avoided a cemetery visit due to concerns about his appearance. Additionally, he reportedly denigrated US soldiers who fought at Belleau Wood during World War One, a pivotal battle honored by the US Marine Corps.
Trump’s dismissive attitude towards military sacrifices has drawn criticism, raising concerns about his respect for those who serve their country.
