Chester, a city in the UK, has been hailed as the ‘world’s most beautiful’, sparking curiosity about its true beauty. Despite unfavorable weather conditions on my journey there, the charm of Chester quickly became evident.
Upon exploring the city for just half an hour, it became apparent why it holds such a prestigious title. The well-preserved Roman walls, known as the City Walls, create a timeless atmosphere as you enter the city center. Walking along the top of these historic fortifications offers stunning views of the city and its surroundings, a journey that takes about 45 minutes.
The picturesque high street, lined with slightly crooked buildings housing a mix of independent shops, bookstores, and cozy cafés, adds to the city’s unique allure. The timber-framed ‘Rows’ along the high street provide a covered walkway filled with charming boutiques, a rare sight in bustling city centers today.
Besides the historical City Walls, Chester offers attractions like the impressive Chester Cathedral, the Roman Amphitheatre, and the recognizable Suspension Bridge featured in the TV show “Hollyoaks.” Families can enjoy a visit to Chester Zoo, home to over 30,000 animals, just a short drive away from the city.
The city also boasts a vibrant pub scene, with traditional pubs, modern breweries, and upscale bars catering to various tastes. Despite its beauty and historical significance, Chester maintains a laid-back atmosphere distinct from neighboring cities like Liverpool.
Chester’s recognition as the world’s most beautiful city stems from a study evaluating architectural aesthetics based on the ‘golden ratio.’ Online Mortgage Advisor’s research found that Chester excelled with 83.7% of its buildings meeting the criteria for the golden ratio, solidifying its top position.
Beyond the city center, Chester offers tranquil canalside walks and moorlands just a short stroll away, providing a peaceful retreat into nature. Grosvenor Park, with its serene pond and picturesque views of the Cheshire countryside, is a hidden gem for nature enthusiasts.
Despite the challenging weather during my visit, Chester’s enduring charm left a lasting impression. A return trip to this enchanting city is on the agenda, hopefully with better weather to fully appreciate its beauty. Visit chester.com for more information.
