Beware: Scammers Targeting Phones with Fake Texts

Must read

Fraudsters are continuously devising new methods to deceive individuals, and the latest risk appears to be originating from regular text messages. Recent research by security experts from Malwarebytes reveals a significant increase in fake conversations being distributed to smartphones.

Some messages start with a simple ‘Hello’, while others imply prior acquaintance with the recipient. For instance, one message discovered by Malwarebytes reads, “Hi, I noticed your contact information is saved in my contacts, can you remind me where we talked before.”

The primary objective of these deceptive messages is to establish a connection and acquire personal details that can be exploited to steal data, as reported by the Express. Malwarebytes explains that once a recipient responds, scammers will engage in a friendly conversation. Their ultimate aim is to gain trust and potentially turn the interaction into a costly romance or investment scam, which surprisingly has proven successful.

The well-known “Hi mum” tactic, where scammers pretend to be a family member in distress, has led to substantial monetary losses to digital criminals in the UK alone. It is now essential for owners of iPhones or Android devices to remain vigilant, refrain from responding, and avoid clicking any links sent by unknown contacts. Malwarebytes warns that responding to such messages confirms the activity of your number, making you a target for further scams.

If you receive a suspicious message, it is advisable to exercise caution and refrain from engaging with unknown contacts. Stay informed by selecting Daily Mirror as a ‘Preferred Source’ on Google News for immediate access to the latest news updates.
