“Dan Evans Contemplates Quitting Davis Cup Team Over Doubles Dispute”

Must read

Dan Evans, a prominent figure in the Davis Cup, expressed his frustration over a selection decision that led him to contemplate quitting the Great Britain team. The seasoned singles player, who was part of the British team that clinched victory in the 2015 Davis Cup, felt slighted after being overlooked for the doubles event.

In a candid interview with the i, Evans voiced his disappointment and sense of insult at never being chosen to play doubles in the Davis Cup matches. Despite his limited doubles experience on the tour, Evans argued that his skills in doubles were noteworthy and should not be discounted based solely on rankings.

Evans highlighted the need to prioritize playing styles over rankings when selecting players for Davis Cup ties. His discontent peaked when he was excluded from the doubles lineup at the 2021 Davis Cup Finals in Austria, where he was solely assigned singles duties while Neal Skupski and Joe Salisbury formed the doubles pair.

Reflecting on his past attempts to secure a doubles spot, Evans expressed bewilderment at the repeated oversight. However, his persistence paid off when he and Skupski emerged victorious in a doubles match against Colombia, contributing to Great Britain’s overall success in the Davis Cup Finals.

Despite his triumph, Evans faced a setback in the following year’s finale due to an injury. Meanwhile, the ongoing 2025 Davis Cup Finals saw Great Britain absent from the competition following a defeat to Japan in the qualifying round. Italy progressed to the semi-finals, led by Matteo Berrettini and Flavio Cobolli, showcasing their prowess even without key players like Jannik Sinner and Lorenzo Musetti.

Berrettini’s triumph over Jurij Rodionov and Cobolli’s decisive win against Filip Misolic secured Italy’s spot in the last four, setting up a thrilling clash against Belgium.
