Pub chain Wetherspoons’ founder has raised concerns about the tax gap between supermarkets and pubs, highlighting the ongoing challenge for the hospitality sector. This comes as Rachel Reeves is set to announce tailored assistance measures for pubs. The Chancellor is expected to introduce relief measures worth around £300 million to aid pubs in adapting to the conclusion of pandemic-related support.
Tim Martin, the chairman of JD Wetherspoon, emphasized that in addition to addressing the high business rates, pubs are facing stiff competition from discounted prices offered by supermarkets. He urged the Chancellor to level the playing field, pointing out the disparity in VAT rates between pubs and supermarkets.
Meanwhile, Rachel Reeves acknowledged the struggles faced by pubs and assured that appropriate support measures are being developed in collaboration with the sector. The Mirror has been actively promoting the “Your Pub Needs You campaign” to advocate for local pubs.
However, the potential preferential treatment for pubs has sparked demands from other sectors, including music and entertainment businesses. Concerns have been raised about the impact of significant business rate hikes on these industries, leading to potential closures, job losses, and higher consumer prices.
In response to these challenges, calls have been made to extend the relief fund, currently aimed at pubs, to include hotels experiencing similar tax and operational cost escalations. This support fund could help hotels manage their increasing business rates effectively and alleviate financial pressures over a period of time.
