Canadian director Matt Johnson appeared calm and composed despite his upcoming wedding in four days and the start of filming his next movie in eight days. He casually arrived at Toronto’s Revue Cinema in a relaxed outfit to discuss his latest project, “Tony,” a biopic focusing on the early life of renowned chef and TV personality Anthony Bourdain. Johnson expressed his ease in tackling Bourdain’s story, despite the chef’s iconic status following his tragic passing in 2018.
Initially not intending to make a film about Bourdain, Johnson’s perspective changed after meeting actor Dominic Sessa, who plays the lead role in the movie. The shared views on various life issues led them to explore the narrative together. Sessa, aged 23, portrays Bourdain during his early years as a chef in Provincetown, Massachusetts, condensing stories from Bourdain’s book “Kitchen Confidential” into a summer’s tale.
By focusing on the young Bourdain, Johnson avoided the pressure of portraying the older, established figure known to many. He emphasized the complexity of Bourdain’s youth, including his relationships and self-perception as he entered adulthood. Johnson believed this approach made Bourdain’s story more relatable and beneficial to his admirers.
“Tony” is set to premiere in theaters across Canada on August 14, offering viewers a unique perspective on the legendary chef’s formative years.
