At the Pan Pacific championships in Irvine, California, Canadian swimmers Taylor Ruck and Summer McIntosh had contrasting performances on Friday night.
Ruck secured a silver medal in the women’s 100-meter butterfly event and later added a bronze as part of the women’s 4x100m freestyle relay team. These medals marked her fourth and fifth podium finishes in the competition. Ruck, hailing from Kelowna, B.C., achieved a personal-best time of 56.71 seconds in the 100m butterfly, coming in second behind American swimmer Gretchen Walsh, who clinched victory in 55.15 seconds. Australian Alexandria Perkins took the bronze with a time of 56.75 seconds.
Expressing her satisfaction with her performance, Ruck mentioned, “This one was a lot of fun. I feel like I got good rest between prelims and finals, and did all the things just to try and feel relaxed, and just trust my body was going to do what it did.”
In contrast, McIntosh faced disappointment after failing to qualify for the A final of the women’s 400m freestyle event despite winning the B final. The 19-year-old, who holds the world record, took full responsibility for the outcome, acknowledging her misjudgment in the morning heats. She expressed frustration and disappointment, vowing to learn from the experience and ensure it does not recur in the future.
McIntosh’s journey at the competition included a silver in the women’s 200m freestyle and a gold in the 400m individual medley. While McIntosh reflects on her performance, she is preparing for the 200m IM event, where she holds the world record and is a reigning champion.
On the men’s side, Canadians Blake Tierney and Ethan Ekk secured silver and bronze, respectively, in the men’s 200m backstroke event. Tierney claimed his first international gold medal in the men’s 100m backstroke earlier in the competition, highlighting the rewards of his dedicated training.
Ruck continued her successful run by leading the Canadian women’s team to a bronze medal in the 4x100m freestyle relay event. Despite the men’s 4x100m freestyle team missing the podium, the Canadian swimmers showcased their competitive spirit in the face of tough competition.
The U.S. women’s team dominated the 4x100m freestyle relay with a gold medal, while the Australian and Canadian women’s teams secured silver and bronze, respectively. In the men’s category, the U.S. claimed gold, followed by Australia and Japan.
