“Canadian Researchers Win Global Image Contest for Ecological Research”

Must read

Two researchers from Canada have been recognized in a global image contest that showcases ecological research. The 2026 joint BMC Ecology and Evolution and BMC Zoology image competition honored 11 photographs taken by researchers from around the world at different stages of their careers. These images feature animals in their natural habitats, scientists and students engaged in ecological research, and various natural landscapes.

Liam Brennan, a master’s student and photographer at the University of New Brunswick (UNB), won the research in action category with his photo titled “Intertidal education.” The image captures Brennan supervising undergraduate students conducting a long-term fish monitoring project along the coast of St. Andrews, N.B. The photo showcases the students’ curiosity as they examine the fish they collected under a full moon.

On the other hand, Allen (Haolun) Tian, a post-doctoral researcher affiliated with Queen’s University, Hangzhou Normal University, and Zhejiang University in China, claimed the “protecting our planet” category with his photo titled “A bridge between past and present.” The image combines 33 drone photos of the Long Sault Parkway in the upper St. Lawrence River, illustrating the impact of human activities on ecosystems.

Both researchers emphasized the importance of using images to communicate their research and promote environmental awareness. Brennan highlighted the role of images in building public trust and emphasizing the value of environmental education and ecological research. Meanwhile, Tian emphasized that photography can foster natural empathy and help people connect with environments they may not have direct access to.

These winning photographs and others from the competition provide a visual insight into the world of ecological research and the beauty of nature. Through their images, researchers aim to raise awareness about environmental issues and inspire action for conservation and protection of our planet.
