Stellantis and Volkswagen, leading players in Europe’s auto industry, showcased their confidence in electric vehicles at the Paris auto show. They are adapting strategies learned from Chinese competitors and partners who are reshaping their domestic market.
Stellantis, encompassing brands like Citroen, Peugeot, Opel, and Fiat, is collaborating with Chinese companies Leapmotor and Dongfeng to study and enhance their technological capabilities. Stellantis CEO Antonio Filosa emphasized the importance of teamwork and knowledge sharing to improve competitiveness.
Embracing the shift towards electric vehicles, Stellantis formed partnerships with Leapmotor and Dongfeng for production and compliance with “Made in Europe” regulations. The rapid adoption of EVs in Europe, driven by factors like fuel prices and affordable models, is intensifying competition with Chinese firms expanding overseas.
Volkswagen, under the leadership of CEO Oliver Blume, acknowledges China’s influence on their transformation, referring to it as a “fitness center” for the industry. While Volkswagen’s collaboration with Xpeng is focused on the Chinese market, potential partnerships in Europe are still in the conceptual stage.
Both automakers are recognizing the need to learn from Chinese counterparts and adapt to the evolving market dynamics. Despite differing approaches, Stellantis’ successful alliance with Leapmotor in Europe highlights the importance of embracing China’s expertise as a learning opportunity for European automakers.
