Cyclist on GPS Detour Ends Up on Motorway

A cyclist, relying solely on his GPS navigation, found himself on a motorway without any lights and was stopped by police after concerned motorists made multiple emergency calls. The incident took place on the M6 Toll road during the early hours of Monday, January 19.

The cyclist, riding a sturdy bike and carrying a black rucksack, explained to Staffordshire Police that he had been following directions from Google Maps when asked about his unexpected presence on the motorway. Despite the low visibility conditions, his bicycle was not equipped with lights. Police stated that he had missed several exits without realizing he was not supposed to be on the road.

Staffordshire Police’s Road Crime Team 3 reported that they received numerous calls about the cyclist riding on the M6 Toll road. The team expressed astonishment at the cyclist’s reliance on Google Maps, lack of lights on his bike, and failure to exit the motorway promptly once realizing his mistake. The cyclist was escorted off the motorway and charged for the offense.
