Millions of households in the UK are utilizing modified Fire TV Sticks to access premium content like Sky Sports and blockbuster movies at a nominal yearly cost, with some even providing free shows and boxsets. The prevalence of these altered devices on online platforms continues to be a worry for companies like Sky as more individuals opt for unofficial providers.
Sky’s chief operating officer, Nick Herm, highlighted the widespread awareness of jailbroken Fire Sticks among the public, particularly football enthusiasts who proudly display Fire Stick-themed attire. Despite the popularity of these devices, Amazon, the official retailer, emphasizes that they only sell Fire TV Sticks with legal pre-installed apps like Netflix, Disney+, and Prime Video.
The root of the issue lies in the capability to side-load unofficial applications onto these devices, enabling the installation of free streaming software. Amazon’s latest release, the 4K Select Fire TV Stick, may address this concern. This updated device, priced slightly lower, boasts enhanced 4K visuals and operates on a new system named Vega instead of Amazon’s Fire OS.
A notable feature of the new software is its exclusive compatibility with approved applications available via Amazon’s marketplace. Unsanctioned apps are rendered inoperable, potentially signaling the end of illicit streaming on these devices. Amazon explicitly stated, “For enhanced security, only apps from the Amazon Appstore on Fire TV are available for download.”
While existing Fire TV Sticks with unauthorized apps will remain unaffected, the introduction of the 4K Select Fire TV Stick could signal a shift in the landscape of streaming on these devices, offering a more controlled and secure environment for users.
