Brooke Henderson is in contention at the CPKC Women’s Open in Edmonton, with room to make a move. The defending champion from Smiths Falls, Ontario, aiming for her third victory in Canada’s LPGA event, posted a 68 in the second round on Friday, putting her at 5-under par. Heading into the final two rounds, Henderson trails leader Soo Bin Joo of South Korea by four strokes, who sits at 9 under at Edmonton’s Royal Mayfair Golf Club. Henderson was at 7 under before encountering two bogeys on the back nine, one of which hit a spectator after drifting left. She promptly apologized to the spectator and gifted her a golf ball.
Aphrodite Deng from Calgary, last year’s low amateur in Mississauga, finished her round strongly with consecutive birdies to reach 3 under. In this $2.75 million US event, the top 65 players and ties will advance to the next stage. Canadian teenagers Anna Huang from Vancouver and Michelle Xing from Richmond Hill, Ontario, who started the day three shots behind the leader at 5 under, had afternoon tee times.
