Cineplex has announced the appointment of Bill Walker as its new CEO and revealed that a potential sale is being considered. The company’s board is confident in its future but is exploring all options to enhance shareholder value. A Strategic Review has been initiated to evaluate opportunities for growth and maximize returns for investors, including the possibility of selling the company.
Goldman Sachs and TD Securities will act as co-financial advisers for the strategic review. Cineplex, Canada’s largest cinema chain, operates over 1,600 movie screens in nearly 170 theaters nationwide and employs over 10,000 individuals in its entertainment venues.
In 2019, Cineplex was in talks for a $2.8 billion acquisition by Cineworld Group PLC, which ultimately fell through. Former CEO Ellis Jacob will assist the board during the strategic review process. Chair of the board, Phyllis Yaffe, stated that Cineplex holds a strong market position with a leading entertainment asset portfolio. Walker, former head of Landmark Cinemas, expressed his support for the strategic review and emphasized his commitment to operational excellence and shareholder value regardless of the outcome.
