German President Warns of Global Lawlessness Under Trump

Must read

Germany’s president has issued a stark warning, likening the world to a den of thieves and blaming Donald Trump for disregarding international laws that the US had a hand in creating. Frank-Walter Steinmeier criticized Trump’s actions, stating that the US President had exceeded acceptable boundaries. Addressing a Berlin audience, Steinmeier emphasized the erosion of values by the USA, a crucial ally in shaping the current world order.

He expressed concern about the potential transformation of the world into a lawless domain where the most ruthless individuals seize power, treating regions and nations as possessions of a select few dominant forces. Steinmeier emphasized that the world has advanced beyond merely acknowledging the disregard for international laws or the weakening of global order.

The German president cautioned that mid-sized nations, including Germany, were being marginalized, while smaller and weaker states remained vulnerable in the face of escalating threats. Trump faced accusations of violating laws by authorizing a military operation to apprehend Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro.

Tensions rose following reports that the White House was contemplating seizing Greenland, a territory of Denmark. Trump’s warnings to Colombian President Gustavo Petro and his remarks about Cuba and Mexico further stoked concerns. French President Emmanuel Macron also criticized the US, highlighting its shift away from allies and departure from established international norms.

This week, Keir Starmer and European leaders cautioned against the US potentially invading Greenland, stressing the importance of allowing Denmark and the island’s inhabitants to determine their future. Meanwhile, a group of over 20 MPs called for the US to be excluded from the upcoming World Cup due to Trump’s controversial actions, urging FIFA to consider expulsion for its involvement in Venezuela and threats against other nations.

A motion is being proposed in the Commons to express alarm over the “abduction” of Maduro and the intimidation directed towards sovereign states like Denmark, Colombia, and Cuba. Labour MP Brian Leishman criticized the international community and sporting bodies for perceived hypocrisy, citing FIFA’s presentation of the FIFA Peace Award to Trump despite his questionable actions.

Leishman emphasized the need for consistency in upholding international law and condemned the lack of uniformity in global responses to breaches of sovereignty. The motion aims to draw attention to the need for a unified stance against violations of international norms and the importance of holding all nations accountable for their actions.
