“Health Experts Warn: Norovirus Resistant to Hand Sanitizers”

Must read

Health experts caution that a lingering 48-hour illness currently in circulation cannot be eradicated solely with hand sanitizers. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has issued guidelines on the most effective ways to prevent the spread of norovirus.

This advice comes after several NHS trusts declared a “critical incident” linked partly to this ailment. Recent data indicates a 57% surge in norovirus cases in NHS hospitals across England within a week.

The number of cases reached 567 in the week ending January 11, up from 361 the previous week. UKHSA figures show a 47% increase in norovirus infections during the first two weeks of 2026 compared to the preceding fortnight ending December 28.

With the rise in cases and concurrent high flu levels, at least 10 trusts in England have reported critical incidents due to increased demands and capacity issues, as per the British Medical Journal.

Norovirus, commonly known as the “winter vomiting bug”, is a stomach infection causing vomiting and diarrhea. Its primary symptoms typically emerge suddenly but usually subside within 48 hours, including nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.

Additionally, sufferers may experience an elevated temperature, headaches, abdominal discomfort, and general aches and pains. The virus spreads through fecal matter, easily infecting others.

Both the NHS and UKHSA stress the importance of good hand hygiene in preventing norovirus transmission. Washing hands thoroughly with soap and warm water is recommended, as alcohol-based hand sanitizers do not eliminate norovirus.

The NHS advises washing hands with soap and water after using the toilet or changing diapers, as alcohol-based gels are ineffective against norovirus. Precautionary measures to prevent spreading the virus are also provided by the NHS.

Recovery from norovirus typically occurs at home within two days. However, individuals are advised to contact NHS 111 if certain conditions persist, as they can arrange medical assistance.

The increased strain on the NHS due to norovirus and flu cases has led to numerous NHS trusts declaring critical incidents. The Sun reports that Aneurin Bevan University Health Board in Wales has also declared a critical incident.
