“Labour MP Urges Starmer to Address Trump’s Venezuela Violation”

Must read

A prominent Labour MP has cautioned that Keir Starmer needs to be more explicit in acknowledging that Donald Trump violated international law regarding Venezuela, warning of potential chaos.

Dame Emily Thornberry, head of the influential foreign affairs select committee, emphasized the importance of not turning a blind eye to the situation. American troops detained Venezuelan president Nicolás Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores on allegations of being involved in narcoterrorism.

Minister Mike Tapp stated on Monday that it is the responsibility of the US to present the legal justification for their actions. He declined to comment on whether the UK would denounce a potential invasion of Greenland.

Expressing her disapproval of US intervention in Venezuela, Dame Emily highlighted the need for caution in handling such matters. She stressed the significance of adhering to established international norms and avoiding actions that defy global consensus.

There is uncertainty surrounding the future of Venezuela, with Dame Emily underscoring the necessity for comprehensive planning and adherence to legal frameworks. She raised concerns about the precedent set by the US actions, potentially emboldening other nations to assert influence through similar means.

Dame Emily urged the UK government to take a firmer stance against the breach of international law and emphasized the importance of upholding legal principles in addressing such issues.

When questioned about his stance on the US intervention, Home Office minister Mr. Tapp criticized Maduro’s regime, highlighting the atrocities committed under his rule. He echoed the sentiment that the UK government should not mourn Maduro’s removal from power.

Mr. Tapp reiterated that it is the US’s responsibility to justify their actions legally, and the UK and its allies will assess the situation accordingly.

Regarding the motives behind the US operation, Mr. Tapp deferred to Donald Trump’s statements, particularly referencing concerns about narco-terrorism. When asked about the potential influence of Venezuela’s oil wealth, he refrained from delving into speculative details, emphasizing the need for the US to clarify the legal basis of their actions.
