Labour is set to reveal assistance for the struggling pub industry in the UK, with reports indicating that an average of two pubs are closing each day. The government is anticipated to introduce a set of support measures soon to address concerns about an impending tax increase.
Chancellor Rachel Reeves has acknowledged the challenges faced by pub owners and is prepared to take action, particularly regarding business rates. However, the specifics of the upcoming announcement remain unclear, with the industry calling for immediate relief to prevent further closures.
Recent data shows that 188 pubs closed during the last quarter of 2025, with a significant number being community-oriented establishments relying on beverage sales for survival. The Mirror’s “Your Pub Needs You” campaign has advocated for assistance to landlords and their communities.
Despite the potential aid, many in the pub sector believe that substantial measures are necessary to stem the tide of closures, which has surpassed 2,000 since the beginning of 2020. Pubs are facing various challenges, including shifting consumer preferences, wage increases, and escalating energy expenses, but the most imminent threat is the projected rise in business rates due to the end of Covid-related relief and upcoming revaluations.
While the Treasury asserts it is offering a £4.3 billion support package to limit increases in pub bills, there are calls for similar assistance to be extended to other businesses impacted by rates. The hospitality sector saw a decline of 382 sites between September and December, with over four closures daily.
There are concerns that closures may escalate in the new year as financially constrained consumers reduce spending. Additionally, NIQ reported closures of nightclubs and sports clubs over the past year. Industry experts warn of more closures in the coming months without increased support and improved consumer spending.
A Treasury spokesperson emphasized the government’s commitment to supporting pubs and defended the £4.3 billion relief package announced in the Budget to shield most ratepayers from significant business rates hikes.
