Madonna, the queen of pop, is making a triumphant return to claim her throne. Surpassing notable artists like Taylor Swift, Madonna has secured the top spot on this year’s MTV Video Music Awards nominations list for the third time in her illustrious career. With an impressive 11 nominations for the upcoming ceremony, Madonna’s recognition stems from her acclaimed album “Confessions II” and its corresponding film.
In a fierce competition, Madonna outshone Taylor Swift, who holds the record as the most awarded solo artist in VMA history, by earning nine nominations for her album “The Life of a Showgirl” and the music video “The Fate of Ophelia.” Following closely behind Swift are Sabrina Carpenter and Ariana Grande, each receiving seven nominations.
This isn’t Madonna’s first time leading the VMAs nominations. She previously dominated in 1990 and 1998 during her “Vogue” and “Ray of Light” eras. However, Madonna’s iconic status at the awards is often linked to her groundbreaking performance at the 1984 ceremony, where she stunned audiences in a wedding dress and a “Boy Toy” belt buckle while singing “Like a Virgin,” pushing the limits of cable television.
Among Madonna’s acclaimed nominations are for video of the year, artist of the year, and song and collaboration of the year for “Bring Your Love,” featuring fellow nominee Carpenter. The highly coveted video of the year award will see “Confessions” competing against Swift’s “Ophelia,” Grande’s “Hate That I Made You Love Me,” Carpenter’s “Tears,” Bruno Mars’s “I Just Might,” and Gener8ion and Yung Lean’s “Storm.”
For this year’s VMAs, public voting is open for 13 categories, adding an interactive element to the awards. The winners will be unveiled at the live ceremony on September 27, which will be broadcast on CBS, MTV, and streamed on Paramount+.
