The film adaptation of the Greek epic “The Odyssey” continues to dominate the box office, amassing $1.1 billion US since its release on July 17. Directed by Christopher Nolan, this movie has become his highest-grossing film to date, surpassing his previous successes like “The Dark Knight Rises” and “The Dark Knight.” In comparison, his biopic “Oppenheimer” fell just short of the billion-dollar mark, with earnings around $975 million US.
Another blockbuster making waves is Sony-Marvel’s “Spider-Man: Brand New Day,” which exceeded expectations by raking in $1.67 billion US globally after a remarkable $360 million US debut weekend. This achievement places it among the top-grossing movies of all time and sets it as the highest-grossing film of the year, surpassing even “The Odyssey” and “Toy Story 5.”
“The Odyssey” is set to expand its reach further with its upcoming release in the lucrative Chinese market. The film is slated to hit Chinese screens this Friday, with expectations running high as it will be shown on most of the country’s 800 Imax screens. The CEO of Imax China anticipates significant demand for the film in this market.
The allure of Imax technology has played a significant role in driving the success of both “The Odyssey” and “Spider-Man: Brand New Day.” Imax, known for its immersive cinematic experience, has seen a surge in popularity despite challenges faced by the film industry during the COVID pandemic. The technology, which originated in Canada in 1967, has evolved from showcasing natural landscapes to becoming a hallmark of event cinema with major releases like “Avatar” and Nolan’s works.
With an increasing demand for Imax formats globally, only a limited number of theaters, including nine in Canada, can project in the sought-after Imax 70mm format. Nolan’s close association with Imax led him to shoot “The Odyssey” entirely in this format, making it IMAX’s highest-grossing domestic release with $147.3 million US in domestic earnings.
The success of these films, along with others like “Michael” and “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie,” has propelled Hollywood to its strongest box-office performance since the pandemic. Ticket sales are up by 18.5% compared to last year, with five movies already crossing the $1 billion US mark this year. Analysts predict that summer box-office revenue will surpass $4 billion US, a significant milestone indicating a thriving industry.
