Teaching Assistant Faces Hearing for Attending UEFA Course

Must read

A teaching assistant at Ysgol Bryn Castell in Bridgend faced a professional standards hearing for attending a football training course during a period of sick leave that was originally denied. Jamie Harris, a University of South Wales graduate, had persistently sought admission to the prestigious UEFA A license course in Newport for three years before finally securing a spot. Despite being dismissed and acknowledging his initial response lacked integrity, Harris maintained that his attendance during sick leave was due to personal issues.

Harris, who had already completed UEFA B and C license courses, had saved up to cover the £3,500 fee for the UEFA A license course. The course, known for attracting candidates from across the UK, has been undertaken by renowned figures like Thierry Henry. Harris, an experienced football coach who has worked with various teams, including Yeovil Town and Barry Town, expressed his excitement at being accepted onto the competitive program.

While on sick leave from Ysgol Bryn Castell due to personal pressures, Harris attended the course in June 2024. Despite his request for unpaid leave being denied, he claimed his employer did not specify constraints during his sick leave. Encouraged by his family to participate in the course, Harris believed it would benefit him professionally, particularly in his role at a school catering to children with additional learning needs.

Upon his return to work, Harris was confronted about his attendance at the course, leading to his dismissal. He admitted to not being fully transparent initially but later provided a comprehensive account. Harris denied feeling unfairly treated for the denied leave request, attributing his actions to confusion rather than frustration.

Currently employed at Woodlands special school in Cardiff, Harris acknowledged the perception of attending the course while on sick leave but denied that it was the primary reason for his absence. Despite facing challenges, Harris remains committed to his career in sports development. The hearing is ongoing.
