Despite his earlier skepticism about NATO’s reliability, Trump now extols the valor and dedication of British military personnel, declaring the UK Military as unmatched in spirit and prowess, albeit second only to the US Armed Forces.
The former president’s change in tone came after his critical comments on Fox News, where he questioned NATO’s commitment and the extent of their involvement in Afghanistan. His remarks drew sharp criticism from Sir Keir Starmer, who denounced Trump’s statements as disrespectful and shocking, urging an apology for the offense caused to the families of the fallen and wounded soldiers.
When asked about demanding an apology from Trump, Starmer emphasized the significance of the strong UK-US partnership for national security. The Afghanistan conflict claimed the lives of 3,486 NATO troops over two decades, with 2,461 being US military personnel. Canada also mourned 165 deaths, including civilians, in the prolonged engagement.
