Donald Trump’s administration will hold an impromptu press briefing today at the White House. The schedule was adjusted to accommodate a press conference featuring Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt. The specific topic of discussion has not been disclosed, but it comes in the wake of public outrage following the fatal shooting of an unarmed woman by an ICE agent in Minnesota.
Earlier this morning, a large group of demonstrators congregated outside an immigration enforcement center in St. Paul, Minnesota. The protest stemmed from an ICE agent shooting Renee Nicole Good, a mother of three, as she tried to drive away in her vehicle.
The press conference is set for 1 pm in Washington DC, corresponding to 6 pm UK time.
In a post on Truth Social after the incident, Trump alleged that a video he viewed showed the driver of the vehicle deliberately running over the ICE agent. He also falsely claimed that the agent was injured and recovering in the hospital.
Following the incident, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz denounced the misinformation circulating and criticized the chaotic handling of the situation by federal authorities.
Video footage of the event depicts an officer positioned near the SUV as another officer attempts to open the door. When the driver steers away from the officers and begins moving, one of the officers fired multiple shots at close range. No other officers were in the vehicle’s path when it crashed into parked cars, and the shooter walked away unscathed.
Despite the circumstances, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem swiftly labeled the incident as an “act of domestic terrorism.”
Mayor Jacob Frey of Minneapolis contradicted the official account provided by the Department of Homeland Security, disputing the claim that ICE officers fired in self-defense.
As the investigation unfolds, tensions rise amid conflicting narratives and demands for transparency in the handling of the tragic event.
