“Starmer Vows Parliament Vote on Troop Deployment to Ukraine”

Must read

Keir Starmer has assured that Members of Parliament will have the opportunity to vote before any deployment of troops to Ukraine if a peace agreement is reached with Russia’s President Vladimir Putin.

During today’s PMQs session, Starmer mentioned that in the event of a British troop deployment to the region, a vote would be required. Emphasizing the need for a legal framework, he stated that any deployment would occur post-ceasefire to bolster Ukraine’s defenses, conduct deterrent operations, and establish secure military bases.

Responding to a query from Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch about the number of troops for a potential peacekeeping force in Ukraine, Starmer reiterated that the deployment would only happen after a ceasefire and would focus on supporting Ukraine’s capabilities, deterrence operations, and infrastructure protection. The exact troop numbers would be determined based on military planning and shared with the Parliament prior to any deployment.

Starmer reaffirmed his commitment to parliamentary oversight by indicating that a debate and vote would be conducted in the Commons if a “legal instrument” was necessary for the deployment. He expressed optimism following the joint declaration signed in Paris, stressing the importance of allied support for peace efforts with Ukrainian President Zelensky.

The Prime Minister highlighted the urgency for lasting peace, noting that progress had been made but cautioning that Putin’s cooperation was essential for a successful resolution. He criticized Putin’s recent actions, citing attacks on civilians in Ukraine and attempts to disrupt peace talks with baseless claims.

In conclusion, Starmer underscored the collective efforts of European and American allies in pursuit of peace, acknowledging the challenges ahead while reiterating the resolve to achieve a sustainable peace agreement.
