The Davis Cup final’s second singles match was interrupted when a spectator in the stands fell ill, causing a halt in play. Flavio Cobolli of Italy was in the midst of a crucial moment against Jaume Munar, attempting to break his opponent’s serve, when the incident occurred.
Munar had dominated the first set with a 6-1 victory and was leading in the second set when Cobolli seized an opportunity to make a comeback. However, the match was paused as medical personnel attended to the spectator, leading both players to retreat to their benches.
Commentator Arvind Parmar commended Cobolli for his swift response, noting the crowd’s quick reaction to the situation. As the fan received assistance, the umpire Marijana Veljovic conversed with the players, while Italian captain Filippo Volandri offered advice to Cobolli.
Following the spectator’s removal from the stands, Parmar mentioned the potential delay in play as the individual was assisted out of the arena. Co-commentator Nick Leicester confirmed the person’s exit, assuring viewers that medical support was available.
The brief interruption lasted approximately ten minutes before Cobolli managed to break Munar’s serve and even the set at 1-1. Italy held a 1-0 lead in the match, courtesy of Matteo Berrettini’s earlier victory over Pablo Carreno Busta. A win for Cobolli could secure Italy’s third consecutive tournament win, a feat not seen since the USA’s dominance in 1972.
However, should Munar emerge victorious, the competition would advance to a decisive doubles round. Both nations were missing key players, Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner, who withdrew from the final before the event began.
