“Former Top 100 Tennis Player Withdraws Mid-Match”

Must read

Nicolas Kicker decided to withdraw from his match against Gustavo Heide at an ATP Challenger Tour event in Florianopolis, Brazil, while facing a challenging situation on the court. Kicker, who had lost the first set 6-2 and was trailing 5-1 in the second set, opted to end the match.

The 33-year-old tennis player, who was once ranked No.78 globally, holds the unfortunate record of being the highest-ranked professional player convicted of match-fixing. In 2018, he received a six-year ban from the sport for his involvement in manipulating two separate Challenger tournament matches in 2015.

Following an appeal, Kicker’s suspension was reduced by four months after cooperating with the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) by participating in an educational initiative. He created a video for the ITIA, sharing his experience with corruption and cautioning other players about the consequences.

Reflecting on his past, Kicker expressed regret over the mistake he made in 2015, which led to severe repercussions on his career. He acknowledged the impact of his actions and the price he paid for his misstep, admitting that he tarnished his reputation in the tennis community.

Despite facing financial challenges and being approached by individuals offering support in exchange for match manipulation, Kicker emphasized the distressing nature of intentionally losing and the lasting effects on his standing within the sport.
