Britain is prepared to assist allies in intercepting Russian shadow vessels that are funding Vladimir Putin’s military activities, according to the Foreign Secretary. Yvette Cooper has pledged to intensify measures against Russia’s covert fleet, comprised of deteriorating oil tankers operating under false flags to avoid Western sanctions. Cooper emphasized the need for more decisive actions against these clandestine ships, which are providing financial support to the Kremlin for its military actions in Ukraine and for compromising critical undersea cables.
Recent collaboration between British forces and the US resulted in a high-stakes operation to apprehend a tanker with Russian ties accused of violating oil sanctions in Venezuela. While British personnel have not yet boarded these vessels, officials are reportedly exploring the legal framework for potential military intervention.
During a visit to Helsinki, Ms. Cooper boarded a patrol vessel and met with Finnish Border Guard members responsible for safeguarding Finland’s 830-mile border against Russian threats. The patrol ship, Turva, was involved in a mission targeting a Russia-affiliated vessel accused of tampering with essential undersea cables in the Gulf of Finland.
In an interview with the Mirror, the Foreign Secretary expressed concerns over the Russian shadow fleet traversing British waters, bypassing sanctions, fueling conflict in Ukraine, and posing environmental and national security risks, including damage to undersea infrastructure. When asked about the possibility of seizing ships, Cooper affirmed readiness for enforcement operations but highlighted the importance of coordinating with international partners to exert pressure on the clandestine fleet.
Advocating for a complete ban on Russian oil shipments to cut off a crucial funding source for Moscow, Cooper also noted the UK’s monitoring of enforcement actions by European allies against illicit vessels in the Baltic Sea and off the French coast.
Ms. Cooper witnessed a demonstration by Finnish Border Guards showcasing their vessel seizure tactics, underlining the deterrent effect of recent raids and crew arrests. Finland retains the authority to use military force against rogue vessels when necessary.
Amid a surge in Russian vessels encroaching on UK waters, Defense Secretary John Healey previously issued a warning to Putin following an incident involving a Russian spy ship, Yantar, targeting RAF pilots with lasers outside UK jurisdiction.
Cooper emphasized the escalating presence of Russian vessels and shadow fleet ships in UK waters, reaffirming the commitment to intensify efforts against these operations to protect national security interests.
During her tour of the Arctic Circle, the Foreign Secretary engaged in discussions with Finland’s President Alexander Stubb, focusing on heightened security concerns in the High North region following geopolitical tensions, including President Trump’s considerations regarding Greenland’s strategic significance.
President Trump’s proposals to annex Greenland, citing concerns about Russian or Chinese influence, have underscored the geopolitical complexities in the Arctic region, prompting increased attention to security dynamics in the High North.
