Photographer Frederik Ruegger came across the show “At Home with the Furys” while browsing TV schedules, captivating his interest. Being a devoted boxing enthusiast, Gypsy King Tyson Fury shared insights into his life and heritage within the Traveller community.
Intrigued by this, Frederik, a German residing in Berlin, embarked on a journey to Manchester to attend the renowned Appleby Horse Fair, the largest annual gathering for Gypsy and Traveller communities in Europe. Armed with his 28mm camera, he was drawn to the traditional folk song ‘I’m a Stranger in this Country’ playing at a CD stall, inspiring the title for his upcoming book of photographs captured at horse fairs in the UK and Ireland between 2022 and 2024.
Expressing his admiration for Tyson Fury and the Traveller community, Frederik felt a connection to their sense of being an outsider. Immersing himself in the fairs, he built close relationships with the Travellers, gaining their trust and access to their lives for his project. His candid shots, taken with a retro feel, reflect the enduring traditions of the Travellers.
Despite the challenges of using analogue equipment and risking film damage at airport security, Frederik’s dedication paid off in creating a remarkable visual narrative. He emphasized the importance of preserving the unique traditions and identity of these communities, advocating for their cultural heritage to be respected.
Frederik’s respectful approach and genuine intentions fostered lasting friendships with the Travellers, motivating him to revisit the horse fairs and document the growth and evolution of the community over time. His book, “I am a Stranger in This Country,” published by Kehrer Verlag, offers a glimpse into the world of the Travellers, showcasing their lives through his lens.
