A British man tragically passed away after being attacked with a chair during a confrontation involving ten local individuals while vacationing in Cape Verde. The victim, identified as 25-year-old Dean Taylor from south-east London, succumbed to his injuries on January 7 while being transported to a nearby hospital following the incident in Santa Maria, a popular tourist destination on Sal Island. Authorities have apprehended five men in connection with the fatal assault on the sales worker. According to police reports, Taylor was involved in a dispute with a group of approximately ten Cape Verdean nationals, during which he was struck with a chair, as well as subjected to multiple punches and kicks while on the ground.
The victim’s father, Alexander Taylor, expressed profound devastation over the tragic loss, stating that his family, including his wife and daughter, were deeply affected by the incident. Recounting the heartbreaking moment he received the news of Dean’s passing, Alexander emphasized the profound impact it had on him. The Judicial Police of Cape Verde disclosed that five suspects, aged between 19 and 35, have been detained in connection with the incident. The altercation took place in the early hours of January 7 on a street in Santa Maria, resulting in the death of the 25-year-old British citizen, who was initially misidentified as Irish until later confirmation by the Foreign Office.
Dean had traveled to Cape Verde with three friends at the end of December, with plans to return shortly after the fatal altercation. As Alexander recounted, the group’s trip was intended for leisure, but a confrontation ensued when one of Dean’s friends intervened in a situation involving a woman and an inebriated individual, prompting Dean and his friend to step in to assist. The altercation quickly escalated as bystanders joined in, leading to the tragic outcome. The family faced unexpected expenses to repatriate Dean’s remains, as their travel insurance did not cover such costs, delaying the funeral arrangements. Alexander issued a cautionary message to British tourists considering Cape Verde as a holiday destination, advising vigilance and awareness of one’s surroundings.
The Foreign Office assured that they are providing support to the bereaved family and maintaining communication with local authorities to address the situation.
