Asda Plans Major Job Cuts After Holiday Sales Slump

Must read

A leading supermarket is facing the possibility of over 150 job cuts due to disappointing holiday sales. Asda is looking to reduce expenses and streamline its management structure following a challenging Christmas season that led to a decline in market share.

The festive sales of Asda dropped by 4.2% this year, contributing to a decrease in its market share to 11.4%, the lowest level in recent years. Consequently, the company is considering trimming over 80 management positions and potentially impacting numerous warehouse employees.

In contrast, Tesco and Sainsbury’s saw an increase in sales during the holiday period, offering a different narrative in the retail sector. While the exact number of job losses is uncertain, consultations for potential redundancies are ongoing. The GMB union is actively supporting affected members through collective discussions and individual meetings at various distribution centers and depots.

Amid the restructuring plans, which include establishing regional hubs for transport operations and involving Evri in parcel-handling, Asda is aiming to enhance its operational efficiency. The company acknowledged the need to optimize tasks, promote regional flexibility, standardize work processes, and reduce reliance on external support services.

In a communication obtained by the Telegraph, Asda informed employees about the reduction in regional management roles, consolidating sub-regions to improve operational efficiency. While acknowledging the challenges of change, the company expressed regret over parting ways with some colleagues.

Asda, the UK’s third-largest supermarket chain, faced backlash over a previous round of layoffs in November when nearly 500 employees were let go without a consultation period.
