A recent update in the way internet is accessed in UK households has led to a surge in the use of Virtual Private Networks (VPNs). The new regulations from UK regulator Ofcom now require individuals to verify their age before accessing adult websites. This change aims to prevent children from viewing inappropriate content, as statistics show that 8% of children aged 8-14 in the UK have visited adult sites.
Ofcom stated in an online post that this alteration is a crucial step in safeguarding children online and altering the way adults in the UK view pornography. Despite the importance of protecting young individuals from stumbling upon adult content, many UK internet users are hesitant to provide personal details like names, addresses, and financial information to access restricted sites.
Following the implementation of the new rules, there has been a significant increase in the use of VPNs. VPNs are utilized to conceal IP addresses and secure online activities. They can also deceive websites into thinking the user is accessing the internet from a different country, which is beneficial for accessing region-restricted content like US Netflix or UK services such as Sky Go and BBC iPlayer while abroad.
Although it remains unclear if the Ofcom regulations are directly responsible for the surge in VPN adoption, one VPN provider, Proton VPN, reported a remarkable 1,400% hourly increase in user sign-ups since July 25, coinciding with the enforcement of the rules.
Proton VPN highlighted that major global events often trigger spikes in user sign-ups, and the recent surge aligns with this trend. Additionally, several VPN services have experienced a surge in popularity, with five VPN services ranking among the top 10 most downloaded apps on UK app stores.
While Ofcom’s initiative is crucial for enhancing online child safety, concerns have been raised regarding the requirement for adults to disclose sensitive information to unfamiliar entities. Jake Moore, Global Cybersecurity Advisor at ESET, emphasized the importance of scrutinizing VPN providers to ensure data privacy and security. Free VPN services available online may pose risks, including data breaches and loss.
For individuals considering using a VPN, it is recommended to opt for reputable providers and avoid free versions that may compromise data security.
