Donald Trump has issued a warning that he might enforce a 100% tariff on products brought in from Canada if the country strikes a trade agreement with China. The US President expressed his discontent on Truth Social, addressing Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and cautioning him against turning Canada into a hub for Chinese goods destined for the US.
While Trump has been engaged in a trade conflict over the past year, Canada recently finalized a deal to reduce tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles in exchange for lowered import duties on Canadian agricultural goods. Initially praising this arrangement, Trump later criticized Carney, stating that a trade deal with China would have severe repercussions for Canada.
During a recent outburst, Trump predicted that China would severely impact Canada’s economy and way of life if a deal were to be made. He threatened that any such agreement would lead to a 100% tariff on all Canadian products entering the United States.
These statements followed an awkward speech by Trump at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, where he mistakenly referred to Iceland and Greenland interchangeably. Trump had previously threatened tariffs on eight European nations, including the UK, but retracted the threat after claiming progress on a future deal regarding Greenland.
As a result, the US will not proceed with imposing tariffs on Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the UK, the Netherlands, and Finland, starting February 1. Trump’s decision to not enforce these tariffs came after what he described as a “very productive” meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, where progress was made towards a potential agreement concerning Greenland.
In his statement, Trump indicated that he would not implement the tariffs set for February 1, based on the progress made in the Greenland negotiations.
