The grieving family of a 12-year-old boy who tragically lost his life in a shark attack is honoring their cheerful and amiable son. Nico Antic was swimming with friends on January 18 when he was attacked by a shark, resulting in severe injuries to his leg. He was quickly taken to Sydney Children’s Hospital for urgent care.
In a heartbreaking update, Nico’s parents Lorena and Juan confirmed his passing earlier today. The incident, suspected to involve a bull shark, was part of a series of four reported shark attacks in New South Wales over two days.
The family expressed, “Nico was a vibrant, friendly, and athletic boy with a profoundly kind and generous nature. He exuded vitality, and that’s how we will always remember him.”
They extended their gratitude to the first responders and medical staff at Sydney Children’s Hospital, Randwick, and the community for their support during this challenging time. They also requested privacy as they mourn their loss.
An online fundraiser has raised $240,000 (£121,000) to assist Nico’s family. Nico’s incident was the first of several shark attacks that occurred in subsequent days. His friends were lauded for their bravery in rescuing him from the water.
Steve Pearce, CEO of Surf Life Saving NSW, addressed the increased shark activity in Sydney, advising caution near river mouths due to potential shark presence. He emphasized the importance of avoiding swimming in murky waters and suggested opting for pools as a safer alternative.
