The film “Obsession” has captivated global audiences, reaching a milestone by crossing the $500 million mark at the worldwide box office. This horror hit, released as an original film in the 2020s, has become the highest-grossing movie of its kind in the post-pandemic era, surpassing even Pixar’s “Elemental.” With a budget of just $750,000, “Obsession” has also broken records by becoming the highest-grossing film ever made for less than $1 million.
Written and directed by Curry Barker, a 26-year-old filmmaker, “Obsession” premiered on May 15 and saw a consistent increase in weekly grosses during its initial three weeks in theaters, a feat not seen since “E.T.” The film’s success continued as it grossed $263.4 million domestically and $238.1 million internationally, totaling over $501.5 million by the end of its U.S. theatrical run.
Focus Features acquired “Obsession” following its debut at the Toronto International Film Festival, making it the highest-grossing festival acquisition in history. The film’s commercial triumph has opened doors for its young cast, with lead actors Inde Navarette and Michael Johnston landing prominent roles in upcoming blockbuster films.
The overwhelming success of “Obsession” has set the stage for Barker’s next project, a horror film titled “Anything but Ghosts,” in which he will also star alongside co-writer Cooper Tomlinson.
