The veteran voice of Calgary Flames radio broadcasts, Peter Maher, has passed away at the age of 79. Maher, who served as the team’s play-by-play commentator for radio broadcasts for 33 consecutive seasons starting in 1980, was known for his iconic catchphrases like “Yeah, baby!” and “You can put it in the win column!” His career highlights included the Flames’ Stanley Cup win in 1989 and their journey to the finals in 2004 before retiring after the 2013-14 NHL season.
The Calgary Flames expressed their condolences to Maher’s friends, family, and fans, acknowledging his significant contribution to the team and the community. Maher, a native of Campbellton, N.B., had previously called Toronto Maple Leafs games before joining the Flames when they relocated to Calgary in 1980.
Rob Kerr, who worked alongside Maher for years, praised Maher’s dedication to storytelling and journalism in his broadcasting. Kerr highlighted Maher’s meticulous approach to his work, citing an instance during the 2004 Stanley Cup Finals when Maher’s exuberant call drew attention. Maher, who was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2006, also covered various prestigious events such as NHL All-Star games, the 2005 IIHF World Championship, and the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver.
Following his retirement in 2014, Maher was honored with the naming of the broadcast booth at the Scotiabank Saddledome in his memory. Additionally, Maher’s legacy lives on through an annual award presented by local media in Calgary to the Flames player who embodies sincerity, integrity, dedication, and respect.
