Canadian boxer Tammara Thibeault embodies the essence of living in the present throughout her boxing journey. When her career-defining moment arrived on August 8, she remained focused on tackling each round as it came. It wasn’t until a few days later, holding the championship belts, that the magnitude of her achievement truly hit her.
Thibeault, a 29-year-old from Shawinigan, Quebec, secured a unanimous victory over Australia’s Desley Robinson in Orlando, Florida. All three judges scored the fight 100-90, making her the first Canadian woman to claim the unified professional world champion title. By defeating Robinson, Thibeault added the IBF and WBO middleweight titles to the prestigious Ring Magazine belt in just five professional fights, setting a historical record.
Maintaining a zen-like focus, Thibeault navigated a challenging moment during the fight when she experienced significant bleeding from a headbutt. Despite the setback, she demonstrated composure and skill to secure the win, emphasizing her ability to overcome adversity and deliver a dominant performance.
While pursuing her professional career, Thibeault also ventured back into Olympic-style boxing in late 2020. Her achievements include winning a Canadian amateur title in November and clinching a silver medal at the Boxing World Cup in Guiyang, China, in June. Training alongside national-team boxers from India and New Zealand in Belfast provided her with diverse sparring partners, enhancing her adaptability and problem-solving skills.
Thibeault finds joy in the creative freedom that professional boxing offers, particularly appreciating the opportunity to showcase her personality through unique outfits. While representing Canada remains a source of pride, professional boxing allows her to express more of her identity to the world.
The world championship win has not deterred Thibeault from pursuing her goal of competing at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics. Reflecting on her experience at the 2024 Olympics in Paris, where she narrowly missed a medal, she views her professional and Olympic careers as distinct yet equally challenging paths.
The outpouring of support following her victory has been overwhelming for Thibeault, who aims to inspire young athletes with a message of perseverance and self-belief. Her upcoming focus is on the Pan American championships in October in Pueblo, Mexico, as she takes time to recover before diving into the next phase of her boxing journey.
Despite the titles and accolades, Thibeault remains grounded, approaching each challenge one step at a time with determination and a hunger for future accomplishments.
