Ukrainian authorities investigating top officials in President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s office were disclosed on Wednesday by anti-corruption agencies. This development came after the country’s recently ousted defense minister called for national elections despite the ongoing conflict with Russia’s invasion. The scrutiny poses a challenge for Zelenskyy as Ukraine’s conflict with its larger neighbor enters its fifth year.
The investigation aims to uncover a criminal network allegedly under the control of a current and a former lawmaker, implicating senior figures from the presidential office and others, as stated in a joint release from Ukraine’s National Anti-Corruption Bureau and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office. Further information will be provided in due course.
While Zelenskyy refrained from commenting publicly on the probe, he did issue a decree removing Iryna Mudra from her role as deputy head of the president’s office. This investigation presents another trial of Zelenskyy’s political fortitude, following previous challenges such as the resignation of his chief of staff Andriy Yermak, who was later linked to a significant corruption probe in a critical period for Zelenskyy’s administration post-Russia’s invasion in February 2022.
The recent dismissal of Defence Minister Mykhailo Fedorov, a longstanding ally, has also added to the pressure on Zelenskyy. The Ukrainian parliament endorsed Yevhenii Khmara as the new defense minister, nominated by Zelenskyy after Fedorov’s removal.
In a notable development, Fedorov called for elections in Ukraine, diverging from Zelenskyy’s stance that a ballot cannot be held under the current martial law due to the ongoing war. Fedorov emphasized the need for a legitimate and viable mechanism to restore democratic processes amid the prolonged conflict, citing systemic governance issues and corruption that have weakened Ukraine’s ability to combat the war.
Zelenskyy’s office remained silent on Fedorov’s address, indicating a divergence in their viewpoints. The political upheaval unfolds against a backdrop of recent military achievements by Ukraine, utilizing advanced drone technology to target Russian oil facilities, disrupt operations of Russia’s army, and strike key Russian assets. Despite these successes, challenges persist in U.S.-led peace efforts and defense capabilities due to constraints on access to critical interceptors.
The escalating situation also witnessed clashes between Russian and Ukrainian forces, with both countries reporting drone attacks causing casualties. Russian air defenses intercepted numerous Ukrainian drones in various regions, while a Russian drone strike in Ukraine resulted in fatalities and injuries, underscoring the ongoing tensions and hostilities between the two nations.
