A global coalition of soccer fan associations has initiated a petition demanding the resignation of Gianni Infantino as FIFA president following his proposal to sell future World Cup profits to private investors. The petition, tagged InfantinOut, also urges a restructuring of FIFA to prevent such incidents in the future.
Describing Infantino’s attempt to commercialize the World Cup as a disgraceful act that betrayed the sport, the petition highlighted the FIFA President’s decision to abandon the idea due to widespread criticism. Among the fan groups supporting the petition are Football Supporters Europe, Football Supporters Africa, the Independent Supporters Council in North America, and approximately 40 national fan organizations worldwide.
Despite facing pressure from various soccer governing bodies like UEFA, CONCACAF, and the Asian Football Confederation, Infantino has refused to step down. The petition accuses him of a severe leadership failure, lack of transparency, and a disregard for accountability, destroying trust in FIFA. It emphasizes the necessity for Infantino’s resignation for the credibility of FIFA and the preservation of the sport.
The petition also criticizes Infantino for his involvement in controversial projects such as the failed European Super League and advocating for more frequent World Cup tournaments. Calls for his resignation have intensified, with the soccer community expressing concerns over the direction of FIFA under his leadership.
