Canada’s Marco Arop clinched the fourth spot in the Diamond League track and field event held in Lausanne, Switzerland at Stade Olympique de la Pontaise. Arop set a fast pace and led the pack going into the final lap but couldn’t sustain it, finishing the race in fourth place with a time of 1:43.18.
The race was won by Kenya’s Emmanuel Wanyonyi in 1:42.19, followed by Algeria’s Djamel Sedjati in second with a season-best time of 1:42.31, and American Brandon Miller securing the third position in 1:42.55.
Last year, Arop and shot putter Sarah Mitton were the only two Canadians to make it to the Diamond League Final in Zurich, where they both finished third. Arop, positioned second in the men’s 800m Diamond League standings behind Kenya’s Emmanuel Wanyonyi, was in a good position to qualify for the upcoming Wanda Diamond League Final scheduled for September 4–5 in Brussels, Belgium.
In another event, the reigning Olympic champion Letsile Tebogo from Botswana triumphed in the men’s 200m, clocking in at 19.87 seconds. South Africa’s Sinesipho Dambile secured the second spot in 19.98 seconds, while Zimbabwe’s Makanakaishe Charamba finished third in 20.14 seconds.
On the women’s side, American Kayla White won the 200m event with a time of 22.18 seconds. Great Britain’s Amy Hunt and Nigeria’s Favour Ofili had a close finish for second and third place, both recording a time of 22.32 seconds. Jamaica’s Shericka Jackson, a two-time women’s world champion, suffered an injury and had to be assisted off the track in a wheelchair.
