Government officials have provided an update on alterations to the online driving test booking system. Currently, learners can schedule their practical test through the Government website. The site advises that users will enter a queue when initiating the booking process and will receive an estimated wait time.
Booking online is faster than by phone due to high call volumes. Test bookings are available online from 6am to 11.40pm, with the option to reserve a test up to 24 weeks in advance. There is no waiting or cancellation list for the system, requiring details such as vehicle type, provisional license, test specifics, center, and date.
Discussion on driving tests surfaced during a Public Accounts Committee meeting on January 15, where MPs questioned officials about data use to prevent errors and fraud. Legacy systems were highlighted as problematic, causing issues with outdated processes requiring constant maintenance.
Notably, outdated systems hinder fraud and error detection as they lack AI compatibility. Efforts are being made to modernize these systems, including the driving test booking service, under the Department for Transport’s investment plans for service improvement.
Driving tests are managed by the DVSA within the Department for Transport. The challenges posed by outdated systems are being addressed, with investments prioritized for data and digital enhancements. Collaboration between departments aims to upgrade legacy systems for improved efficiency.
Anticipated changes to the driving test system are expected by spring 2026, introducing new regulations for test booking and management. Under the revised system, only learner drivers can book tests, limiting changes to two per appointment and allowing center changes within proximity to the original choice.
