Must read

A trade association representing the British pub industry has emphasized the necessity of a comprehensive, long-term strategy to safeguard the future of pubs in the UK. The British Beer & Pub Association has urged for discussions with government officials to address the challenges facing pubs, with a new support package set to be announced soon. This call for action follows Chancellor Rachel Reeves’ directive to explore assistance for the struggling hospitality sector prior to the upcoming holiday season.

In response to the proposed measures to alleviate business rates and streamline licensing regulations, the BBPA has advocated for more significant reforms to business rates to provide vital support to pubs nationwide. Andy Tighe, the Director of Strategy and Policy at BBPA, expressed concerns over the escalating costs and regulatory burdens faced by pubs, emphasizing the need for a fairer tax and regulatory framework to ensure the sustainability of the industry.

Labour MP Tonia Antoniazzi, chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Beer Group, highlighted the urgent need for business rates reform, citing the challenges faced by local pubs in her constituency. She stressed the cumulative impact of taxation changes on small and medium-sized businesses, urging a thorough review of the current system to alleviate financial strains on pub owners.

Antoniazzi expressed confidence in the government’s commitment to supporting pubs and anticipated positive developments in the upcoming support package. Echoing this sentiment, an HM Treasury spokesperson affirmed the government’s dedication to assisting pubs and acknowledged the importance of the support measures introduced in the recent Budget announcement.
