The UK government has expressed a lack of sympathy towards the potential fall of the Iranian regime, with Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander characterizing Iran as a hostile state aligned with Russia. Amid mass protests in Iran calling for regime change and resulting in at least 116 fatalities, Alexander emphasized the UK’s long-standing view of Iran as a security threat in the Middle East and globally, citing the regime’s repressive nature towards its own people. She underscored the importance of quelling the violence in Iran to prioritize stability.
Highlighting Iran’s disruptive actions, Alexander pointed out its collaboration with Vladimir Putin in circumventing sanctions through oil transportation. When questioned about the UK’s reaction to a regime change in Iran, Alexander suggested a similar stance would be adopted. The Labour representative advocated for a peaceful transition of power in the event of a regime change, emphasizing the need for fundamental freedoms and democratic principles to be reinstated in Iran.
Regarding the presence of British nationals in Iran, Alexander noted their limited numbers. In response to threats by Iran’s parliament speaker that the US and Israel could be targeted if provoked, President Donald Trump expressed backing for the Iranian protesters, offering assistance for their pursuit of freedom. While reports suggested military options against Iran were under consideration, no final decision had been made by the US.
Amid escalating tensions, Alexander refrained from commenting on foreign policy matters but called for Iranian authorities to prioritize citizen safety, uphold fundamental freedoms, and exercise restraint in responding to protests. The US state department cautioned against underestimating President Trump’s resolve, emphasizing his commitment to follow through on stated intentions.
Ultimately, any potential conflict would hinge on Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, with US military readiness in the region aimed at safeguarding American interests, allies, and partners.
