Samsung, known for its top-tier phones, is about to face stiff competition as Qualcomm gears up to unveil its latest processor upgrade. The current flagship phones like the Galaxy S25 and S25 Ultra rely on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite processor, a premium chip found in many high-end Android devices. This week, Qualcomm will introduce the next generation of this processor, the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, at a significant event in Hawaii. While specific details are yet to be disclosed, Qualcomm has confirmed the upcoming release and explained the reasoning behind the leap to Gen 5.
Don McGuire, Qualcomm’s Senior Vice President & Chief Marketing Officer, stated, “Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 marks the fifth generation of our premium 8-series platforms, aligning with our simplified naming strategy for better consumer understanding.” The processor series started with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 in 2021, followed by the 8 Gen 2 in 2022 and 8 Gen 3 in 2023. Last year, Qualcomm introduced the Snapdragon 8 Elite instead of the anticipated 8 Gen 4, but now returns to the “Gen” naming convention for the 5th iteration in the 8 series.
Despite the initial confusion, one thing is clear – the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 promises exceptional speed. Full details will be unveiled soon, along with the list of phones set to incorporate this cutting-edge chip. Qualcomm emphasized that the new processor represents a significant advancement in their premium-tier evolution, providing clarity and confidence to consumers and partners navigating their product roadmap. Stay tuned for the official announcement tomorrow.
