An urgent alert has been issued to all Windows 10 users, emphasizing the imminent end of support for the operating system by Microsoft in 2025. With the deadline approaching rapidly, Microsoft has emphasized the importance of this information.
According to Microsoft’s website update, Windows 10 will cease to receive monthly security and preview updates after the October 2025 monthly security update. This means devices running on Windows 10 will no longer be protected from the latest security threats beyond this date.
For users who still favor Windows 10, the recommendation is clear-cut: either upgrade promptly to Windows 11 or opt for Microsoft’s Extended Security Updates, which ensures smooth PC operations for the next three years.
Failure to take action exposes your desktop or laptop to potential cyber attacks and system-disrupting bugs. Unlike Windows 11, Windows 10 will not receive any new features or enhancements in the future.
Here’s a brief guide on what steps to take before the Windows 10 deadline:
UPGRADE TO WINDOWS 11
For those with compatible PCs, transitioning to Windows 11 should be straightforward. Microsoft offers free upgrades, requiring users to follow simple instructions to make the switch. Alternatively, new laptops come pre-installed with Windows 11, though purchasing a new laptop can be a costly alternative.
STICK WITH WINDOWS 10
For users opting to remain on Windows 10, enrolling in Microsoft’s Extended Updates (ESUs) is highly recommended. While ESUs do not introduce new features, they ensure protection against known vulnerabilities and bugs. Microsoft plans to charge $30 (£24) annually for this service, offering “Critical and Important security updates” for Windows 10.
Yusuf Mehdi, Executive Vice President, Consumer Chief Marketing Officer at Windows, highlighted the ESU program’s availability for consumers, providing a one-year option at $30. Enrollment details will be released closer to the 2025 end-of-support date.
Although Windows 10 will continue to function after October 14, neglecting to secure it may lead to potential risks. It is advisable not to rely on Windows 10 post the support deadline.
