Chatting with individuals in various communities reveals a common concern about the rising cost of living. This issue has always been significant to me, whether advocating for more affordable infant formula or assisting families in avoiding predatory lending practices.
Having extensively traveled the country last year, engaging with Iceland’s 30,000 employees and five million customers, we compiled our insights into the ‘Iceland Manifesto’ released before the previous year’s election. Feedback indicated a sense of disconnection from politicians and widespread struggles with the increasing costs of essentials like childcare, veterinary care, heating, and food, underscoring the persistent challenges faced by many.
Accepting a role as a Labour peer, my primary goal is to bring practical insights from the business world to Westminster, amplifying the voices of businesses and communities nationwide. The privilege of contributing to the House of Lords debates, drawing upon my experience as a retailer and entrepreneur, is a significant opportunity.
Understanding firsthand the daily pressures on businesses to meet payroll and families to afford nutritious meals, I aim to provide a unique perspective based on managing a family business that supports thousands of jobs and offers affordable, quality food to millions.
The current Labour Government’s focus on economic growth is commendable, emphasizing the need to remove obstacles hindering private enterprise, which is crucial for fostering investment confidence. I firmly believe that meaningful progress is achieved when individuals with practical experience actively participate in shaping policies and decisions.
In this new capacity, I remain committed to speaking candidly and advocating for pragmatic solutions. Westminster functions best when individuals with real-world involvement contribute their insights, and I intend to uphold this principle.
